What are Root Canals?
A root canal is a procedure that involves removing the pulp of a tooth. Inside each of your teeth is an inner pulp which houses the nerves and blood supply that are necessary in keeping the tooth strong and vital. If this pulp becomes infected by decay or is exposed, it may need to be removed completely. Most teeth that need a root canal will be incredibly painful and be sensitive to both hot and cold.
Why are Root Canals needed?
One of the most common reasons for needing a root canal is because you ignored a cavity for too long. The decay will eventually makes its way down into the tooth, infecting and damaging the pulp. Another reason for needing a root canal is because a tooth has cracked or broken, exposing the pulp inside. Most often, you’ll experience severe pain and sensitivity when a tooth needs a root canal.
Who is a good candidate for a Root Canal?
We will perform an examination to determine if you might need a root canal. Dental x-rays help us to further identify problems with decay or if a tooth has cracked enough to expose the inner pulp. If you need a root canal, it’s important to have the procedure done as soon as possible. This prevents the possibility of severe pain and the eventual loss of that tooth.
What happens during Root Canals?
We will administer a local anesthetic via injection into the area receiving the root canal. A rubber dental dam helps us to isolate the tooth from the rest of the mouth. The decay is removed and we then work to remove the pulp from the tooth. The canals of the roots are cleaned out thoroughly before a medicated material is poured inside. The hole that was created in the tooth is then filled with composite resin and you’ll be ready to leave the office.
